CCA Global Perishables Conference

14th-15th May 2019 Fresh Park Venlo, The Netherlands.

Focus on working together to help reduce Food Waste

Open discussion and commitment to transparent collaboration will drive the perishables industry to improve, was just one of the clear take-outs from our Global Perishables Conference at Fresh Park Velno, the largest fresh and food hub in Europe, last month.

The industry must work closely with legislators and bodies pushing for standards such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was another strong conclusion following the discussions and presentations at the two-day event, attended by 30 CCA members and perishables decision makers.

CCA was pleased to welcome new members, Trip & Co, producers of thermo blankets amongst other cargo products, and fruit and vegetable importers Fresh Partners, who provided valuable insight from a shipper’s perspective, which drove the debate forwards.

“We have to believe in what we are doing and follow it through,” said CCA’s new Secretary General Nicola Caristo, from Alha Group, who took over the reigns from Edwin Kalischnig at the event.

Nicola said a few words on his vision for the Association, which is focused on delivering tangible results for members and the industry as a whole.

This focus was demonstrated in a presentation by Philippe Schuler, CCA Researcher and food waste campaigner with Too Good To Go, a free smartphone app which enables users to buy leftover food at the end of the day from retailers.

Together with Edwin, he presented preliminary findings of a pilot scheme undertaken by CCA members last month to share temperature data from perishable consignments moving from Latin America to the Middle East, aimed at improving the supply chain and tackling food loss.

“Establishing trust is important and I hope that together we make an impact, and this is the beginning of a journey towards less food waste,” said Edwin.

Partners for the pilot included Cargolux, Able Freight, AirFrance KLM, SmartCAE and Xtreme Technologies.

Xavier Ripoll, Sales and Marketing Director, Able Freight Service, whose digital customer portal DataHub was used during the pilot, was a lively contributor to the many discussions in Venlo. “Let’s work together on the problem, not parallel to the problem,” he said. Able Freight will host a CCA event in Los Angeles in December, with more details to be announced shortly.

Philippe Julien, Cargo Digital Innovation at Air France KLM shared his experience of the value of data sharing, giving food for thought on how the CCA pilot could develop.

The importance of introducing standards and enforcing compliance were the focus of discussion following presentations by Andrea Gruger, Head of Special Cargo at IATA, who introduced the new IATA CEIV Fresh scheme, and Vijan Chetty, General Manager Coastal at PPECB, who shared his experience of the importance of standards and requirements within the perishables industry.

“We have due diligence as an industry to make sure we can improve on reducing product loss in the cool supply chain,” said Andrea.

“The CCA project is a good example of bringing everyone involved in perishable business together to find solutions.”

Wolfgang Engel, Sr. Project Manager DQS sparked more discussion with his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities for perishables when compared with standards in the pharmasector.

Saskia Louwen, Business Development at Archea Group gave an interesting introduction to the use of food waste for Bogas and Jan Vorstermans,

Business Development at Fresh Park Venlo lead a tour of Venlo, which included a visit to the Fruit and Vegetable Auction and a walk around of one of the facilities.

Delegates took advantage of the many networking opportunities, including a dinner at Maashof, where Stavros Evangelakakis, CCA Chairman and Global Product Manager Healthcare and Perishables, Cargolux thanked Edwin for his 7 year leadership as CCA Secretary General.

The Perishables Conference was a lively platform for new partnerships, open discussion, and learning opportunities.

“Let us be the change,” said Stavros. “If you really believe what you are doing and you want to be part of the change, do it, don’t wait for anyone. ”Our thanks to everyone who attended, to our speakers, and to our hosts Fresh Park Venlo.

Our next event will focus on the Pharmaceutical sector, in Paris, France on 23-24 September.
