Southampton, UK: Discount retailer Lidl plans to open a new regional distribution centre in Southampton.
Lidl said it will spend £55m on the warehouse which is the company’s 10th centre in the UK.
The move follows Lidl’s pledge to spend £1.5bn in the UK over three years in a bid to bolster the number of warehouses and stores.
Earlier this year, Lidl said it would relocate warehouses in Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset and Livingston in West Lothian, Scotland, to Bristol and Scotland’s Eurocentral respectively.
Lidl is also opening two new warehouses in Wednesbury in the West Midlands and Exeter, in Devon, and expanding its regional distribution centres in Newton Aycliffe, in County Durham, and Runcorn, in Cheshire.
Lidl sales grew by 8.4% and its market share rose to 4.6%, according to Kantar Worldpanel’s latest figures.
